Olympic Gold Medal awarded in memoriam to a Czech gymnast in 1948

Eliška Misáková was an outstanding member of the women’s Czechoslovak gymnastic team that won the team gold. Unable to compete, she died of polio on the day of the competition in a London hospital. She is the only athlete to receive an Olympic gold medal in memoriam (photo of her medal is from Archive Czech Television).

100 Years of Sokol in the United States (1865-1965)

The first Sokol club in the US was formed on February 14, 1865, by three Czech immigrants. The stamp was issued on February 15, 1965, following the efforts of many American Sokols, led by Sokol historian, James Cihak. The medal honors 150 years of Sokol in America, celebrated in in 1990.

Poster (left) advertises a 1921 Sokol festival in Bratislava, probably one the earliest on Slovak soil, since Sokol was not allowed during the Hungarian rule.
Slovak Sokol (Sokol USA) in the US was established in 1896 as Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol. The poster, on the right, is for the Slet in 1954, the last in Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Hudec: 1936 Olympic gold medalist on rings and two-time World champion on the event; member of two Czech teams that won World Championships.
Provazniková: Czech Sokol Director of Women, member International Gymnastics Committee and organizer of women’s gymnastics competition at the 1948 Olympics. She defected to the US in 1948 due to the Communist take-over in her country.

Renata Tyršová (1854-1934), wife of Miroslav Tyrš and daughter of Jindřich Fügner

Widowed at age 30, she remained active in Sokol and the fine arts, and was recognized as a role model for women and an advocate of women’s rights.

Czech artist, Med, a Sokol member, has featured gymnasts in motion. His works have been published in gymnastic magazines and displayed in galleries. He also painted dancers and religious figures.
